Rail congestion in New Zealand: November 2, 2020

Posted by Expeditors on Nov 1, 2020 2:06:05 PM

As reported on the October 23, the updated rail situation has worsened from Tauranga to Auckland. The current transit time for rail from Tauranga to Auckland is now sitting at 12-15 days.

These delays to import containers and the port omissions are causing empty containers to not be available for export shipments at a timely fashion. Certain carriers are experiencing severe shortages in 40GP/40HC containers at this time. Napier and Lyttelton are seeing equipment shortages for all types due to port omissions.

We foresee these backlogs continuing until mid-December at the earliest.

If you have any containers due into New Zealand that are urgent contact your local Expeditors representative for more information and operational assistance.
