In an Executive Order published on February 11, 2025, President Trump announced an increased tariff on imported aluminum of 25% and the removal of current exclusions on aluminum imports.
These tariffs will apply to aluminum and aluminum derivatives from most countries of origin. This Executive order will also remove all exclusions, exemptions, and quota agreements from Argentina, Australia, Canada, Mexico, the United Kingdom and the European Union.
These new tariffs can be avoided if the products are processed from aluminum smelt and cast in the United States on the condition the importer can provide U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) with additional data to confirm its origin.
Aluminum derivatives outside of chapter 76 of the harmonized tariff schedule will have the value of their aluminum content subject to these tariffs.
This Executive Order also outlines a process for producers or trade associations to request the addition of specific products to the aluminum derivatives list and be subject to these tariffs.
The aluminum tariffs will go into effect and the general product exclusions will end on March 12, 2025.
