USTR and Taiwan Agree to Negotiating Mandate on U.S.-Taiwan Initiative on 21st-Century Trade

On August 17, 2022, in a press release, the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) announced that consensus was reached on the negotiating mandate for the first round of talks under the U.S.-Taiwan Initiative on 21st-Century Trade. This initiative was launched on June 1, 2022, with a goal to “develop concrete ways to deepen the trade relationship between the United States and Taiwan.” The formal negotiations are expected to begin in early fall. The trade areas for these discussions include:

  • Trade facilitation;
  • Digital trade; and
  • Non-market policies and practices.
