On January 30, 2018, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) outlined an agreement on interagency cooperation on areas of mutual interest.

The agreement includes areas that affect the public health, providing information to Americans about the food they consume, or that would have an impact on trade or the economy. The agreement also outlines interagency workgroups, which will act to improve coordination on issues of common concern.

Some of the areas of concern are:

  • Dual-Jurisdiction Food Facilities – Such as facilities that handle meat, poultry, and egg products regulated by USDA, and other food products regulated by FDA;
  • Produce Safety – Protecting public health through the Food Safety Modernization Act;
  • Federal Regulation of Biotechnology Products – Working with other federal agencies to modernize the regulatory system on U.S. agricultural biotechnology.

The agreement came into effect on January 30, 2018 and will remain in effect for 10 years.
