U.S. and Australia Issue Joint Statement on Trade

On March 29, 2022, in a joint statement, the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) Katherine Tai and Australian Minister for Trade, Tourism and Investment Dan Tehan expressed “their shared commitment to building a free, fair, open, interconnected, resilient, secure, and prosperous Indo-Pacific.” Their discussions resulted in commitments on a variety of topics, including working with the World Trade Organization (WTO) to:

  • “Address geostrategic and economic challenges currently facing the international community;”
  • “Identify, prevent, deter, and address trade-related economic coercion;” and
  • Address “non-market policies and practices.”
