Labor Issues at LA/Long Beach Port: April 7, 2023

Posted by Expeditors on 4/7/23 2:34 PM

Union activity at the port of LA/Long Beach has resulted in the closure of all terminals on Friday, April 7th.  A shortage of dockworkers has caused operations to come to a halt on Thursday evening and again on Friday morning throughout the day. The action is seen as local to the LA/Long Beach port and is not currently impacting any other ports. The ILWU has been working without a contract since July as negotiations between the PMA and the ILWU continue.

No significant backlogs or delays are expected from a single day’s action and the terminal is expected to return to normal operations after the holiday weekend. If there is further labor disruption, there could be delays resulting in more operational impacts.

We continue to monitor the situation as it evolves. Please reach out to your Expeditors contact should you have any questions.
