In a press release published on March 12, 2025, the European Union (EU) has announced retaliatory tariffs on US goods in response to U.S. trade measures. The counter-tariffs, set to take effect on April 1, 2025, come after the U.S imposed a 25% tariff on steel and aluminum import imports.
The EU Commission is going to introduce the countermeasures in two steps:
- First, the Commission will allow the suspension of existing 2018 and 2020 countermeasures against the US to lapse on April 1, 2025. The countermeasures that were imposed in 2018 and 2020 automatically entering into force April 1, 2025, and additional ad valorem duty rates are going to be introduced for the impacted products. - Second, the Commission is putting forward a package of new countermeasures on US exports that will come into force by mid-April after a consultation with the Member States and stakeholders. The consultation will run until March 26, 2025. The preliminary list of products which could be subject to possible measures can be found on the link below:
