On December 7, 2020, in a press release, the Council of the European Union (EU) announced that amendments are being adopted to allow member states, should they so wish, to temporarily exempt or apply a reduced rate of value added tax (VAT) to approved COVID-19 vaccines and testing kits. Members can also apply the exemption or lower rate of VAT to closely related services.

These measures will be applicable until December 31, 2022.
