In a Cargo Systems Messaging Service (CSMS) bulletin published on March 7, 2025, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) provided guidance on the implementation of a 25% import duty on aluminum articles and derivatives beginning March 12, 2025.
The published guidance reviews the new header Harmonized Tariff Schedule of the United States (HTSUS) classifications for both aluminum and aluminum derivatives. Also included is reporting instructions for steel derivative duties that are based on the aluminum content of the product.
Aluminum or aluminum derivatives, admitted in a Foreign Trade Zone (FTZ) on or after March 12, 2025, must be admitted under “privileged foreign status”, unless it is eligible for “domestic status” and will be subject to the Section 232 duties.
No drawback will be available for these imposed Section 232 duties
All previous Section 232 tariff rate and absolute quotas will expire on March 11, 2025.
