BIS Conducting Assessment on the Use of Mature-Node Semiconductors

Posted by Timothy Miller on 1/25/24 5:00 PM

In a press release published on January 18, 2024, the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) announced an “assessment of the use of mature-node semiconductor devices in the supply chains that support—directly or indirectly—U.S. national security and critical infrastructure.”

This assessment was requested by the Secretary of Commerce to identify how U.S. companies source mature-node semiconductors, encourage a level playing field for so-called “legacy chip” production, and reduce national security risks.
