Hayli Gubbi Volcano Eruption Disrupts Air Travel Across Regions

Posted by Expeditors on Nov 26, 2025 9:40:57 AM

On November 23rd, the Hayli Gubbi Volcano in Ethiopia erupted for the first time in 12,000 years, sending ash plumes up 45,000 ft, blowing in a northeasterly direction.

Regional alerts were issued, and local airports, such as Addis Ababa, temporarily suspended flights. As of Tuesday, the ash cloud was reported to be passing over India. Local airlines canceled or delayed flights on Monday and Tuesday out of precautionary measures. Airlines are being advised to avoid potentially polluted airspace, which may lead to longer transit times and/or partially loaded aircraft.

We are currently in active communication with airlines regarding their plans and monitoring any changes in the weather around the ash cloud. Please contact your local Expeditors representative with any cargo concerns.
