Additional U.S. Sanctions Against North Korea

On September 20, 2017, President Trump issued an Executive Order detailing additional financial sanctions imposed by the U.S. on North Korea.

The Executive Order expands on previously existing sanctions to, among other things, block “[a]ll property and interests in property that are in the United States, that hereafter come within the United States, or that are or hereafter come within the possession or control of any United States person” of several classes of individuals—specifically, North Korean “persons”; those persons operating in most North Korean industries; those who own, control, or operate North Korean ports; those who “have engaged in at least one significant importation from or exportation to North Korea of any goods, services, or technology”; and those who have assisted or acted on behalf of individuals whose property and interests are blocked under the Executive Order. The New York Times reported that the order represented “a widening of American sanctions on North Korea . . . in an effort to further choke off its trade with the outside world, presenting a united front with South Korea and Japan in hopes of forging a common strategy for confronting the isolated nuclear-armed state.”

The Executive Order went into effect on September 21, 2017.
