On February 14, 2019, the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) and the United Kingdom (UK) signed two Mutual Recognition Agreements (MRAs) to help ensure that trade in certain “product sectors is not disrupted when the UK leaves the European Union.”

Both agreements, the Framework MRA and the Marine Equipment MRA, “…replicate substantive provisions of existing MRAs between the United States and the European Union…”

The Framework MRA covers:

  • Telecom equipment;

  • Electro-magnetic compatibility for information and communications technology products;

  • Pharmaceutical good manufacturing practice inspections.

The Marine Equipment MRA covers:

  • Life-saving equipment;

  • Fire protection equipment;

  • Navigational equipment.

According to the USTR, “U.S. exports to the UK of products covered by these agreements exceeded $5 billion in 2018.”
