On August 28, 2018, the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR), Robert Lighthizer, and the Kenyan Cabinet Secretary for Industry, Trade and Cooperatives, Peter Munya, established a U.S.-Kenya Trade and Investment Working Group to explore ways to deepen trade and investment ties.

According to a joint press release, the working group will, "...support comprehensive trade policies and begin to lay the groundwork for a stronger future trade relationship." The group will also work to maximize opportunities under the remaining seven years of the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA), which has increased Kenyan exports since 2000.

The joint press release states that the current trade between the U.S. and Kenya is about $1 billion per year, with over 70% of Kenya's exports entered into the U.S. under AGOA.
