In a press release issued by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) the Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue announced all imports of fresh beef from Brazil will be suspended due to repeating safety concerns.

USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) has refused 11% of Brazilian fresh beef products since March 2017, non-Brazilian beef imports average a 1% refusal rate. According to the notice, “The suspension of shipments will remain in place until the Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture takes corrective action which the USDA finds satisfactory.”

Brazilian beef imports to the U.S. were reopened in late 2016 for the first time since 2003.
