On July 20, 2017 the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) issued Press Release 0072.17 announcing an agreement has been reached between Chinese officials and the USDA to allow for U.S. rice exports to China for the first time ever.

China is the largest producer and consumer of rice in the world. According to the release, “When the new rice protocol is fully implemented, the U.S. rice industry will have access to this critical market, significantly expanding export opportunities.”

China’s General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection, and Quarantine will complete an audit of U.S. rice facilities prior to the first U.S. rice exports to China.
