U.S. and Mexico Reach a Preliminary Agreement to NAFTA

On August 27, 2018, the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) announced that the U.S. and Mexico reached a preliminary agreement on updates to the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).

The preliminary agreement includes chapters on:

  • Intellectual property protections;

  • Digital trade;

  • An increase in Mexico’s de minimis to $100;

  • Financial services;

  • Obligations to labor;

  • Environmental provisions.

The talks during this latest round did not include Canada.
