In a Joint Statement and accompanying Fact Sheet published on May 12, 2025, the United States and China announced an agreement to reduce tariffs between the two nations for 90 days while negotiations continue.
China will suspend its tariff on the United States but will retain a 10% tariff during the 90-day pause. Additionally, China will suspend or remove non-tariff countermeasures taken against the United States since April 2, 2025.
The United States will remove the additional tariffs it imposed on China on April 8 and 9, 2025, however, all duties imposed on China prior to April 2, 2025, will remain in effect. The 34% reciprocal tariff that was imposed on April 2, 2025, will be paused for 90 days, but a 10% tariff will be retained during the pause.
The United States and China agree to take these actions by May 14, 2025.
