OFAC Announces Sanctions over Crimea

Posted by Kelsay Calvaruso on 2/4/20 5:00 PM

On January 29, 2020, the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) announced the imposition of sanctions on eight individuals in Russia and the Crimea region of Ukraine and one Russian-based company.  The designations are in response to Russia’s attempted occupation of Crimea and continued aggression toward Ukraine.

OFAC is acting in partnership with Canada and the European Union, which also imposed sanctions on the seven Crimean individuals.  These individuals have “asserted governmental authority over the Crimean Peninsula without the authorization of Ukraine, thereby undermining democratic processes or institutions in Ukraine and taking actions or policies that threaten the peace, security, stability, sovereignty, or territorial integrity of Ukraine.”
