In a Federal Register published on September 2, 2015, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced that importers may now provide information to Customs and Border Protection (CBP) electronically.

There currently are requirements that imply a paper copy is needed by uses of phrases such as ““in duplicate,” “a copy of,” a “document,” and “accompanied by a statement.” Within the next few months, CBP, will permit importers to decide on the method with which they would prefer to supply the required information, either paper or electronic.

This interim Final Rule becomes effective on September 2, 2015.
