On May 28, 2014, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) issued a press release announcing their approval of the final changes to the Wool Products Labeling Rules, aimed to align the requirements with the recent modifications to the Textile Fiber Products Identification Act Rules and to provide more flexibly to the industry.

The release explains that, “The Wool Rules require that labels on wool products disclose the manufacturer’s or marketer’s name, the country where the product was processed or manufactured, and information about the fiber content.”

Additional amendments include the following:

  • Incorporate the Wool Act’s new definitions for cashmere and very fine wools
  • Clarify the descriptions of products containing virgin or new wool
  • Allow certain hang-tags disclosing fiber trademarks and performance even if they do not disclose the product’s full fiber content
  • Country-of-Origin Disclosures
  • Invoice or Other Paper
  • Continuing Guaranties

The rule, which was approved in a 5-0 vote, will become effective 30 days after publication in the Federal Register. A publication date has yet to be confirmed.
