In a notice published by India’s Ministry of Finance on April 21, 2025, a safeguard duty of 12% has been provisionally placed on following products that fall under tariff headings 7208, 7209, 7210, 7211, 7212, 7225, and 7226 of the Customs Tariff Act:

  • Hot rolled coils, sheets, and plates;
  • Hot rolled plate mill plates;
  • Cold rolled coils and sheets;
  • Color coated coils and sheets, whether or not profiled; and
  • Metallic Coated Steel Coils and Sheets, whether or not profiled, including Galvanneal, Coated with Zinc or Aluminum-Zinc or Zinc-Aluminum-Magnesium.

The notification exempts this levy if the import price is above the specified one and/or if the said goods are imported from a developing country other than China or Vietnam.

This safeguard duty went into effect on the day of publication and will stay active for 200 days, unless it is revoked, superseded or amended at an earlier date.
