In a press release published on October 18, 2024, the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) announced that the Montreal Convention liability limits for international air cargo are increasing.

These liability limits are reviewed and adjusted every five years. The limit for “destruction, loss, damage, or delay of cargo” will increase from 22 Special Drawing Rights (SDR) to 26 SDR per kilogram, which is about US$35 per kilogram.

The increase to the liability limits for air cargo will go into effect on December 28, 2024.
