On October 17, 2017, the US, Canada, and Mexico concluded the fourth round of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) negotiations. The fourth round of negotiations took place over seven days, from October 11-17, and included United States Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer, Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland, and Mexician Secretary of the Economy Ildefonso Guajardo and took place in Arlington, Virginia.
During the negotiations, the representatives from each country built upon previous rounds and “have now substantively completed discussions in the Chapter on Competition.”
Additional progress was also made in these areas:
- Customs and trade facilitation
- Digital trade
- Good regulatory practices
- And certain sectoral annexes
The parties involved in the negotiations are planning on a fifth round to begin in Mexico City on November 17, 2017 and to continue through November 21, 2017, with additional rounds to be scheduled through the first quarter of 2018.
