In a series of updates published in the Federal Register on November 19, 2024, the Commerce Department’s Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) and the Department of State announced the extension of the comment period for an interim final rule and two proposed rules that are focused on space-related export controls.

The following rules received an extension:

  • An Interim Final Rule from BIS to remove the export license requirements for certain “least sensitive” spacecraft components to over 40 trading partners.
  • A Proposed Rule from BIS that adds license exemptions for commercial space activities.
  • A Proposed Rule from the Department of State that amends the jurisdiction of certain space- related defense articles from the U.S. Munitions List to the Commerce Control List.

The comment period for all three rules has been extended to December 23, 2024.
