European Commission Imposes Safeguard Measures on Imports of Steel Products

On February 2, 2019, the European Commission published a regulation imposing definitive safeguard measures on imports of steel products into the EU.

An investigation launched by the European Commission in March 2018 found that imports of steel products into the European Union (EU) have substantially increased. As announced in a press release by the European Commission, the measures taken cover “…26 steel product categories and consist of tariff-rate quotas above which a duty of 25% will apply.” The measures will remain in place for up to three years.

The definitive safeguard is intended to replace the provisional regulations that were effected in July 2018, “with some important modifications that minimize trade disruptions and preserve traditional trade arrangements in terms of quantities and origins.”
