EU Member States Vote in Favor of Trade Countermeasures

In a press release published on April 8, 2025, the European Union (EU) announced that its Member States voted in favor of the European Commission’s proposal to introduce trade countermeasures against the United States.

The European Union considers the US tariffs “unjustified and damaging, causing economic harm to both sides and the global economy.” The EU would prefer to negotiate with the United States for a mutually beneficial outcome.

Once the Commission’s internal procedures are concluded and the implemented act is published, the countermeasures will enter into force. Duties will be applicable as of April 15, 2025.

These countermeasures can be suspended after a “fair and balanced” outcome has been negotiated.
