Commerce Announces Extension of Steel Import Permits

In a Federal Register Notice (FRN) to be published on January 5, 2017 the Department of Commerce (the Department) will announce an extension of the Steel Import Monitoring and Analysis (SIMA) system until March 21, 2022.

According to the notice, “The purpose of the SIMA system is to provide steel producers, steel consumers, importers, and the general public with accurate and timely information on anticipated imports of certain steel products.” When importing basic steel mill products, an import license acquired from SIMA is required.

This final rule will become effective on March 21, 2017.
