CBP Publishes Guidance on Additional Duty on Automobiles

Posted by Timothy Miller on 4/4/25 5:00 PM

In a Cargo Systems Messaging Service bulletin published on April 2, 2025, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) provided guidance on the 25% duty on the imports of passenger vehicles and light trucks.

The published guidance reviews the harmonized tariff schedule (HTS) codes subject to the additional tariff and reviews the new headings for the additional duty and the specific circumstances you would use each one.

Any passenger vehicle or light trucks entered into a foreign trade zone must be admitted under “privileged foreign status” unless the product is eligible for admission under “domestic status”. The automobiles admitted into a foreign trade zone under “privileged foreign status” on or after 12:01 am EDT on April 3, 2025, will be subject to this additional duty.

No drawback will be available for these additional duties.

The 25% tariff will go into effect on good entered for consumption, or withdrawn from a warehouse for consumption on April 3, 2025, at 12:01 a.m. EDT.
