Canada Enacts Final Safeguards on Imports of Steel Products

On April 26, 2019, the government of Canada announced its decision to impose final safeguards on imports of heavy plate and stainless steel wire products.

New measures the government of Canada will put in place include:

  • Timely and targeted reviews of dumping cases;

  • A more robust steel import regime for strengthening import data;

  • More flexibility for the Canada Border Services in addressing price and cost distortions in foreign markets;

  • Development of a framework for determining when trade remedy actions should self-initiate;

  • Consultations with stakeholders to incentivize Canadian-made steel products;

  • Government support for Canadian domestic producers.
