Canada Announces Intent to Impose Surtaxes on U.S. Aluminum

On August 8, 2020, the Government of Canada issued a notice announcing the intent to impose surtaxes on certain aluminum products from the United States (U.S.) in response to the imposition of tariffs by the U.S. on Canadian aluminum.

The 10% surtax will apply to a variety of aluminum and aluminum-containing products including:

  • Various aluminum wire;
  • Aluminum powders; and
  • Various aluminum containers.

Per the notice, the surtaxes will take effect by September 16, 2020. Comments will be accepted through September 6, 2020.
