On August 9, 2022, in Cargo Systems Messaging Service (CSMS) #52910947, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) announced that a Fruit and Vegetable Name Validation List is now included on the APHIS Core Message Set website.

According to the CSMS, the list “provides genus, species, subspecies, and variety names (PG05) along with corresponding common names (PG17).” The list is not all-encompassing, and it does not indicate commodity admissibility. It is meant to provide the acceptable spellings for the listed commodities as well as the corresponding Integrated Taxonomic Information Systems (ITIS) Taxonomic Serial Number (TSN).
