Since the end of last year, a significant portion of the country has been impacted by numerous weather events that have challenged the nation’s transportation infrastructure and disrupted the flow of goods.
Extreme temperatures, massive snow fall, and significant ice storms have impacted a number of major transportation hubs such as Chicago, Atlanta, Kansas City, St. Louis, Dallas, and East Coast ports. The Port of NY, as an example, has closed early, opened late, or not opened at all 10 times in the last 5 weeks due to weather related issues.
These disruptions have caused terminal & CY congestion, severe chassis shortages, container shortages, and, in many cases, terminal waiting lines of 8+ hours. As a direct result of these various weather related disruptions, additional costs such as per diem, ramp storage, and driver detention, have started to become common.
As the industry actively works through the most recent disruptions, Expeditors will continue to work together with our suppliers & carrier partners to provide our customers with as many options for the most timely and cost-effective transportation of their cargo as possible.
Please contact your local branch for any further assistance and specific concerns.
