White House Applies Additional Sanctions on North Korea

On March 15, 2016, a Federal Register notice was published by the order of the White House and Department of State, announcing that additional sanctions on North Korea had been implemented by the signing of Executive Order (E.O.) 13382.

This Executive Order expands upon the previously implemented E.O. 13466 and “blocks, with certain exceptions, all property and interests in property that are in the United States, or that hereafter come within the United States or that are or hereafter come within the possession or control of United States persons,” of two persons and four entities that were specifically identified, as well as persons determined to be involved in, or to have provided assistance or support for activities that have “materially contributed to, or pose a risk of materially contributing to, the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction or their means of delivery” as well as those determined to be owned or controlled by, or acting or purporting to act for or on behalf of, directly or indirectly, any of those persons.  E.O. 13382 was issued in response to North Korea testing nuclear and ballistic missile technology in January and February of this year.

These additional, list-based sanctions against North Korea went into effect on March 15, 2016. and will remain in place until revoked.
