STR Announces Proposal on Tobacco Regulation for TTP

On August 22, 2013, the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) issued a fact sheet announcing an upcoming proposal on tobacco regulations for the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP).

The fact sheet notes that this proposal is cohesive with the Obama Administration’s trade policy objectives while further advancing its public health policy objectives.

Revised elements of the proposal will include:

  • Exceptions to protect human life or health in regards to tobacco health measures
  • A more in depth process for disputes and settlements
  • Elimination of tariffs on U.S. agriculture exports
