EU Extends its Sanctions against Crimea and Sevastopol

On June 17, 2016, the Council of the European Union (EU) issued Council Decision (CFSP) 2016/982, which amends CFSP 2014/386 concerning restrictive measures imposed in response to what the Council describes as Russia’s “illegal annexation” of Crimea and Sevastopol.

The amendment extends the sanctions against Crimea and Sevastopol for a year (until June 23, 2017) as the EU looks to reinforce that it does not recognize the annexation by the Russian Federation.  The sanctions target trade and investment in Crimea and Sevastopol and apply to EU persons and EU-based companies.

The sanctions include prohibitions on:

  • Imports of products;
  • Investment;
  • Tourism services; and
  • Exports of certain goods and technologies.
