In a press release issued on April 14, 2015, the White House announced President Obama’s intention to remove Cuba from the list of State Sponsors of Terrorism.
President Obama initially ordered the Department of State to review Cuba’s status in December, 2014, and, “after a careful review of Cuba’s record, which was informed by the Intelligence Community, as well as assurances provided by the Cuban government, the Secretary of State concluded that Cuba met the conditions for rescinding its designation as a State Sponsor of Terrorism.”
In light of the findings and the Secretary of State’s recommendation, President Obama submitted the statutorily-required report and certification to congress, who now has 45 days to vote on approving or blocking the proposal to remove Cuba from the list.
Cuba was initially added to the list in 1982.
