China Lifts Ban on Video Game Consoles

Posted by Julia Gogoll on 7/31/15 4:31 PM

On July 21, 2015, the Chinese government lifted a ban that prohibited companies to manufacture and sell video game consoles in China since 2000.

The ban was partially removed in January, 2014, when the Ministry of Culture authorized the production of consoles in the Shanghai Free Trade Zone. The ban has now been completely lifted, allowing firms to produce and sell their goods anywhere in China.

According to a release by the NY Times, “Consoles produced in the Shanghai Free-Trade Zone will automatically be approved for sale in the rest of China.”

However, console makers have to undergo an extensive application process, and the Chinese government has yet to publish specific requirements and conditions.
