On June 4, 2014, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) issued an information notice announcing the closure of the only fumigation facility in the Oakland/San Francisco area, effective June 30, 2014.
Prior to being released into U.S. commerce, certain goods are required to be treated by approved fumigation facilities to prevent the introduction of harmful pests and to comply with U. S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) standards.
Since the Port of San Francisco/Oakland will lose access to an approved USDA facility after June 30, 2014, “all shipments arriving at the Port of Oakland requiring precautionary treatment as a condition of entry will require exportation or destruction for lack of an authorized treatment.”
While there are currently no other replacement facilities in sight, “CBP will continue to work closely with USDA to keep the trade community apprised of developments related to the introduction of alternate fumigation facilities.”
Please contact your local Expeditors branch for specific concerns and questions.
