Several unions representing pilots of Air France have called for a one-week strike or industrial action starting as of Monday September 15, 2014 and expected to last until September 22, 2014. An announcement on Air France’s website indicates the airline is “maintaining constant dialogue with all the unions and talks will continue over the coming days.” If the strike proceeds as planned it is not clear to what extent member pilots will participate in the action, and Air France further indicated that “It is too early to have an exact idea of the outcome of these talks and the consequences of this strike action on our flight schedule.”
In the event the strike proceeds and it is honored by significant pilot representation, there will likely be impact on both passenger travel and cargo flows to/from and connecting through the airline’s airport hubs in Paris. Air France /KLM Cargo has indicated in a customer release that they are implementing cargo contingency plans to mitigate the impact of this action. One such contingency employs the use of the Amsterdam-Schiphol airport hub and flights on KLM and Martinair, whose flight schedule along with the Air France/KLM Cargo trucking services will not be impacted by the Air France pilot union’s action.
Expeditors will continue to monitor the situation and provide further relevant updates as and should they occur. Please contact your local Expeditors branch for any further assistance and specific concerns.
