In an Import Alert published on October 3, 2025, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced that the agency “require import certification for shrimp and spices from certain regions of Indonesia, based on the risk of potential contamination of the food with Cesium-137.”

Import certification will be required for both shrimp and spices from the Island of Java and the Lampung Province on the Island of Sumatra. U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) detected high levels of Cesium-137 in multiple shipments of shrimp and in sample of cloves.

The import certification requirement will go into effect on October 31, 2025.
