FDA Releases Guidance for Industry on VQIP

The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently released a Guidance for Industry regarding the FDA’s Voluntary Qualified Importer Program (VQIP). VQIP is a trusted trader program for importers of human or animal food and has been created under guidance from the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA). 

VQIP participation will be limited to importers with at least 3 years’ experience importing food into the U.S., have a Dun & Bradstreet (DUNS) number, is in good standing with the FDA, and maintain a certified facility. Those accepted into VQIP will be eligible for the below listed benefits: 

  • Expedited Entry into the US
  • Limited Examinations
  • Expedited Laboratory Analysis 
  • VQIP Importers Help Desk 

Applications may be submitted January 1 – May 31 each year for the fiscal year beginning in 2018 and will limit participation to 200 importers for the first year of the pilot.
