On October 1, 2018, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Commissioner Kevin McAleenan outlined the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS’s) northern border strategy.

At the Canadian/American Border Trade Alliance in Washington, D.C. this past Monday, the Commissioner cited several initiatives to meet CBP’s trade and enforcement goals:

  • New imaging technology to screen trucks and railcars;

  • Electronic manifests to reduce wait times;

  • U.S. and Canadian partnership to pursue importers who evade antidumping and duty regulations;

  • Enforcement partnerships to deal with shifts in international trade.

Additionally, the Commissioner said that CBP is working to hire more trade specialists, and he added that “We’ve reduced our hiring time by 50 percent and we will meet our goal this year.”
