In a statement released on March 3, 2025, the Prime Minister of Canada announced the implementation of a retaliatory tariff of 25% on $155 billion worth of goods originating from the United States. This tariff is to remain in effect until the United States withdraws its respective tariff package on Canadian origin goods.
The first phase of this tariff package will begin on March 4, 2025, and will target $30 billion worth of products such as, but not limited to, orange juice, peanut butter, wine, spirits, beer, coffee, appliances, apparel, footwear, motorcycles, cosmetics, pulp, and paper.
If the United States’ tariff package is still in effect 21 days from now, the Prime Minister has stated that the retaliatory package will increase to target goods worth $125 billion.
Goods in transit to Canada on or before March 3, 2025, will be exempt from this tariff. An exemption has been created for vehicles, machines, and appliances. This exemption includes original equipment manufacturer (OEM) tires.
