His Majesty's Revenue and Customs (HMRC) has announced that the next stage of transition for the new United Kingdom Customs system, Customs Declaration Service (CDS), will be delayed until November 30th, 2023.
The originally planned timeline for UK Exports to move from the current customs system, Customs Handling of Import and Export Freight (CHIEF) to CDS was March 30th, 2023. The extension has been decided following a consultation with the border industry to allow further testing of the system and make adjustments before traders move across.
The vision for the UK is, “to be the most effective border in the world” and the implementation of CDS is a part of the overall 2025 UK border strategy. A part of making this vision a reality leans on shifting from paper-driven customs processes and embracing Digitalization. The ability to reuse the data by multiple government departments with one submission, at the same time in the future will be the backbone of this vision.
