UK Publishes Guidance on Sanctions Policy If There is No Brexit Deal

On October 12, 2018, the Foreign & Commonwealth Office of the United Kingdom (UK) published a guidance document on its sanctions policy as part of its series of technical notices related to the possibility of a “no deal” scenario for the UK leaving the European Union (EU).

According to the guidance, the UK will implement United Nations (UN) sanctions through UK domestic law, which will provide the legal basis for those sanctions, after the UK leaves the EU.  If the UK leaves the EU in a “no deal” scenario, the UK will also incorporate any EU sanctions not already implemented through primary legislation into UK law by way of the EU (Withdrawal) Act 2018.

The withdrawal of the UK from the EU is due to take place on March 29, 2019.
