On March 23, 2018, U.S. President Donald Trump approved modifications to the Section 232 steel and aluminum tariffs to allow exemptions for several countries of origin until May 1, 2018.

The countries of origin that are now exempt include:

  • Argentina;
  • Australia;
  • Brazil;
  • Canada;
  • Mexico;
  • South Korea;
  • The members of the European Union.

President Trump will determine country exemption status beyond May 1, 2018 as discussions continue.

The statement from the Whitehouse further noted, “The process for directly affected parties to apply for exemptions still remains in place.” Secretary Ross, and other officials, will consider those requests and evaluate whether the product is produced in sufficient quantity or quality within the U.S. while also taking into account national security concerns.
