On February 29, 2016 the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) issued a press release announcing a verification request has been sent to the Government of Peru under provisions of the United States-Peru Trade Promotion Agreement (PTPA).

The PTPA has a provision that allows for verification requests, with this being the first that has been issued since the agreement began in 2009. These types of requests can be used to confirm all pertinent laws and regulations were met throughout the complete supply chain.

According to USTR Ambassador Michael Froman, “Today’s announcement is an important step forward in our shared commitment to combat illegal logging, which threatens our environment and the legitimate businesses that are abiding by the rules.”
