Update- Possible Department of Homeland Security Shutdown

Posted by Julia Gogoll on 2/27/15 5:01 PM

As a reminder, the current funding for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is scheduled to expire at midnight today, February 27, 2015.

While the Senate passed and submitted a bill to fund DHS, the House of Representatives did not obtain the necessary votes for their counterproposal to finance the department for only three weeks.

According to a release by the New York Times, “House Republicans are now regrouping, scrambling to rally the necessary votes — or come up with another last ditch solution — and the majority leader advised that there could be more votes later Friday evening.”

If the agency will be shut down, roughly 30,000 of its 230,000 employees will be furloughed. Workers who are deemed essential, including Transportation Security Administration officers, Border Patrol agents, frontline law enforcement officials and members of the Coast Guard, will still be required to report to work.

Expeditors will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as they occur. Please contact your local Expeditors office for specific questions and concerns.
