On December 21, 2016 U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) published a public bulletin listing changes to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) listings and other requirements. CITES meets at the Conference of the Parties (CoP), roughly every two years to discuss and review possible amendments to Appendix I and II listings.
CoP17, the most recently held conference amended the two Appendices in the following ways:
- Certain species were moved from Appendix I to Appendix II
- Certain species were moved from Appendix II to Appendix I
- Both Appendix had new species added to each list, including rosewood
These changes will go into effect on January 2, 2017. Any species that is listed on Appendix I or II, must be accompanied with CITES documentation for import, export, or re-export beginning on this date.
